Consumer Decisions in Education between Institutional Quality and Social Image of Schools
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines how parents as education consumers consider reputation, accreditation, and social values when selecting schools for their children. The analysis reveals that school reputation serves as a cognitive shortcut for parents to assess quality, while accreditation provides a minimum quality standard that varies in its importance across different parent segments. Social and moral values taught by schools have become increasingly important considerations amid concerns about moral degradation among younger generations. Parents engage in active information search through various channels, including social media, word of mouth, and direct visits to schools. The decision-making process involves complex tradeoffs between multiple factors that may sometimes conflict with each other. Family financial capacity, geographic proximity, child characteristics, and school community culture all contribute to the final choice. Schools that maintain consistency between their promises and actual practices tend to build stronger and more sustainable reputations. Understanding these consumer behavior patterns is essential for schools to develop appropriate strategies and for policymakers to design regulations that protect consumer interests.
