The Relationship between Reward Systems and Innovation Culture through Incentives, Failure Recognition, and Risk-Taking
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines how reward systems influence employee innovative behavior and organizational innovation culture. The research employs a qualitative literature review approach to synthesize theoretical and empirical findings on the relationship between incentives and innovation. The analysis reveals that short-term oriented reward systems impede innovation by encouraging employees to pursue safe projects with immediate outcomes. Recognition of failed experiments and rewards for learning efforts create a psychological environment that supports risk-taking and innovation. Tolerance for planned failure and acknowledgment of the learning process strengthen sustainable innovation culture. Reward system effectiveness in fostering innovation is also influenced by clarity of criteria, procedural justice, and alignment with employee characteristics and organizational context. Organizations need to redesign reward systems to balance short-term and long-term incentives for innovation. Recognition of innovative efforts, including unsuccessful experiments, should be incorporated into performance evaluation criteria. Future research should examine the effectiveness of various innovative reward system models in different organizational contexts through longitudinal studies.
