Historical Identity and Social Awareness through Islamic Civilization Learning at School
Main Article Content
Abstract
Islamic Religious Education can develop students’ historical awareness by transforming the history of Islamic civilization from factual memorization into reflective engagement with change, evidence, identity, and social life. This article examines how Islamic history teaching can foster historical identity and strengthen students’ social awareness. An integrative literature review combines scholarship on Islamic education, historical consciousness, historical thinking, collective memory, and social purposes of history education. The synthesis indicates that historical identity develops when students understand chronology, causation, continuity and change, historical evidence, multiple perspectives, and the relationship between past and present. Such learning enables students to appreciate Islamic heritage without reducing it to triumphalist narratives. Social awareness develops when historical learning includes ordinary communities, institutions, intercultural encounters, intellectual exchange, diversity, conflict, justice, and the consequences of collective decisions. Local history projects, source analysis, historical empathy, and evidence-based classroom dialogue can further connect Islamic civilization with students’ social experiences. Islamic Religious Education can therefore position historical knowledge as a means of developing reflective Muslim identity, responsible social judgment, and meaningful orientation toward contemporary life.
