Double Burden and Social Well-Being of Female Workers in Eco-Friendly Remote Work Policies: A Socio-Feminist Analysis of Domestic Division of Labor
Main Article Content
Abstract
This literature study examines how flexible work policies, particularly Work From Home with emission reduction claims, affect the social well-being of female workers differently from male workers during economic crises. Adopting a socio-feminist perspective, this research analyzes the gendered consequences of work flexibility on domestic division of labor and emotional burden. The findings reveal that flexible work policies intensify women's double burden because the merging of work and domestic spaces eliminates physical boundaries that previously separated productive and reproductive work. Women experience reduced autonomy over their time, decreased quality of social interactions, limited professional recognition, and declining mental and physical health. The unequal division of domestic labor and excessive emotional burden emerge as determining factors of women's social well-being. The economic crisis exacerbates these conditions by increasing financial pressures and household responsibilities that disproportionately fall on women. This study argues that gender-blind policies reinforce patriarchal structures and deepen existing inequalities. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without considering gender justice as an integral component of social sustainability. Recommendations include formulating gender-sensitive policies, providing affordable childcare facilities, implementing fair parental leave schemes, and conducting awareness campaigns about equitable domestic division of labor. The theoretical contribution enriches socio-feminist discourse on work-life balance and sustainable development, while the practical implications offer guidance for policymakers and practitioners in designing inclusive and just workplace policies.
